PCI’s New Fiber Optic Laser Offers Clear Speed Advantages on Thicknesses 1/8” & Thinner – Also Minimizes Heat-Affected Zones

Hanover, PA – November 1, 2011 – Precision Cut Industries added its Ninth (9th) Laser – a new Trumpf TruLaser 1030 with a 5×10 bed. Fiber lasers offer a higher beam quality (than traditional CO2 lasers) which permits a higher power density on a given work piece. This results in speed advantages over CO2 lasers – as much as 350% faster on 20G steel, and as much as 225% faster on 12G steel. The fiber optic laser loses its speeds advantages on thicknesses over 1/8”. Speed, precision and minimal heat-affected zones make this fiber optic laser well-suited for aerospace, medical, electrical panels & enclosures, and other precision engineering applications.
Specific to PCI’s needs, the Hanover-based company is currently laser cutting nearly 50,000 pieces of a component (which has several holes) supporting the renewable energy industry. PCI must laser cut with speed, while holding an extremely tight tolerance on location of holes and cut-outs.
Ed Wolfgang, PCI Proposal Engineer, explains the speed advantages with the fiber optic laser on 1/8” and thinner material. “In my 40 years of manufacturing experience, I’ve never seen a faster laser with ‘thin gauge’ applications”.
Wolfgang also went on to talk about its ability to cut non-ferrous metals, outside of traditional metals such as steel, stainless and aluminum.
With elimination of the beam purge and laser gases, PCI expects a lower cost per work piece, versus the traditional CO2 lasers (like PCI’s other eight  lasers). These factors, along with reduced training requirements & minimal setup, should result in installation and production within the next couple weeks.
