Metal Cutting

Laser cutting is a quick and flexible form of metal cutting for a variety of manufacturing applications in industry today. It’s flexible because it does not require tooling or making fixtures. It only requires a program file, or pattern, that outlines the shape of the part to be cut. It’s efficient in that the cutting process is quick, relative to other highly accurate forms of metal cutting such as Wire EDM. Laser cutting maintains high accuracy along with high speed.

At PCI, we have both fiber optic and CO2 laser cutting. CO2 laser cutting can cut carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, high strength material and even titanium. Fiber optic laser cutting can also cut brass and bronze which you cannot do with traditional CO2 lasers.

With this technology we can cut up to three quarters of an inch thickness in carbon steel and high strength material. Additionally, we can cut up to a half an inch thickness in stainless steel and aluminum. This makes laser cutting a versatile and powerful option for metal cutting.

PCI uses the latest laser cutting technology and engineering practices. We work directly with our customers to implement techniques like ‘tabbing’ and ‘stitch cutting’. These techniques optimize component part design and the manufacturing process overall.

Laser Cutting Service

Our laser cutting service is also capable of handling sheet sizes from five feet wide to ten feet in length.

We use a nesting software program to optimize part counts to be the most efficient for that sheet of material. We could nest just one part out of a given material thickness, or we can dynamically nest multiple parts. We use multiple sheets to produce an optimal material yield for the area given. This makes our laser cutting service very efficient.

Laser Cutting Speed

How quickly something can be cut and how many pieces you get in the course of a day’s manufacturing is really a function of material thickness. The thinner the material, the faster it’s going to cut. The thicker the material, the slower it’s going to cut. On average, we could cut a sheet of material parts in anywhere from just a couple of minutes to an hour, depending on the complexity of the part and the thickness of the material.

Laser cutting speed can be further optimized by selection of either CO2 or fiber optic laser cutting. Different thicknesses suggest the use of different laser cutting technologies. At PCI we specialize in helping our clients make these kinds of engineer decisions.

Depending on the size of the part and the thickness of the material, you can see how laser cutting speed can be a very efficient manufacturing option.
